The window tinting laws in the state of Texas actually differ depending on the type and year model of the vehicle. The laws also state that as long as you have side mirrors and can view the rear of the vehicle unobstructed, you can have the rear windshield tinted dark or even completely covered (such as with window graphics).

These tinting regulations are explained below with links to the official Texas Department of Public Safety web site.

1 - Inspection and Testing:
Window tinting is regulated through state inspections and testing during traffic stops. In both instances the "darkness" of the glass is measured with a tint meter*. This device measures the VLT (visible light transmittance), which is the amount of light the tinted glass allows through. Allowing visibility into the vehicle. This differs from the light and visibility allowed from the inside of the vehicle allowing you to see out, which is dramatically different.

  • Only the windows directly to the right and left of the driver are inspected on vehicles equipped with side mirrors, year models 1988 and up.
  • Front Windows cannot have less than 20% VLT

Windshield - applies to any window tinting, glass coating, or sun screening device.

Cannot extend below the windshield AS-1 Line or more than 5 inches from the top of the windshield (if no AS-1 line is present). Also, no windshield tinting, coating, or sunscreen device can be red or amber in color.

Note : Illegal window tint can be the reason for failing state safety inspection. State DPS carry light meters especially around the Mexican Border.
