The History of Window Tinting

The history of tinting, coloring, and glazing glass probably goes back as far as the history of glass making itself, when the ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures used colored glass for beads and decorative pots around 3000 B.c.

A form of stained glass was the first known window like glass, made by adding natural chemicals and pigments during the glass making process. It was decorative, and allowed some light through, but was still not useful as a window the way we think of it today.

True glass windows did not appear until 100 A.D. when the Romans began using clear glass for architectural windows. These early windows were usually covered with a cloth shade or drapery. However, this defeated the purpose of the clear glass' transparent quality.

As glass making improved overtime, the first "sheet glass" was developed and then improved upon by Venetians near the 12 century. It is with the use of sheet glass for windows that glass coatings were developed, known as "glazing". Glazed windows were very costly at the time, usually reserved for churches and royal palaces.

Glass production continued to grow overtime, as did coating or glazing technologies such as mirrors. But this was mostly for decoration or function, mirrored glass was often used with windows or openings for lighting.

Glass coating and window tinting as a form of protection from sun light and heat however, is barely over a hundred years old. On March 25, 1902, Irving W. Colburn patented the sheet glass drawing machine, making the mass production of glass for windows possible.

Over the years with the increased use of glass as a sort of transparent wall or enclosure, for buildings, homes, and even vehicles, people began to realize that the effects of the sun on the environment were magnified, increasing the temperature, glare, and destructive U. V. Rays.

Since window tinting, glass coating, and glazing techniques were still underdeveloped and costly, Mechanical blinds, window shades, and drapery were still the most commonly used form of reducing sun rays through glass. Again, this was counter intuitive to the purpose of a glass window... to see through it. Glass coating at the time was more popular than "tinting" as it had been in use for centuries and was more developed, but usually involved volatile and harmful chemicals.

Window tinting began to develop mid-century as a solar control film, for application to window glass, comprised of a vapor deposited aluminum coat, which partially transmits light, interposed between a vinyl stratum and a polyester stratum. Either of which contained an ultraviolet inhibitor and/or a coloring or shading medium. This film was adhered by pressing the surface of its vinyl stratum against the window glass in either dry or wet condition, using transparent adhesives, much as it is today.

There have been many advances in window tinting since then. Now window tinting and glass coating is used for many applications from manipulating light, heat, and visibility to fortifying glass for safety in food production and public buildings.
